A wetsuit is essentially a neoprene insulator, and the way it keeps you comfortable is clever — it traps a thin film of water between the fabric and your skin. The closer the fit, the thinner that water layer becomes, which means less body heat is drawn away and the trapped layer warms up faster. The neoprene thickness itself also matters: a 5 mm panel holds heat noticeably better than a 3 mm one, which is why thicker suits dominate colder dives.

Even in bath-warm tropical conditions, your body is still leaking heat through the neoprene — it just happens at a slower, gentler pace. Cold water accelerates that loss significantly, and that steady drain is what turns a comfortable dive into a shivery one if you've under-geared.
How Thick Is Thick Enough?
The honest answer: it depends on you. "Cold" isn't a fixed number — some divers run warm and handle 68°F in a 5 mm without complaint, while others reach for a 7 mm in the same conditions. Body composition, dive duration, surface intervals, and personal tolerance all shift the equation.
