Overview
Dual-stage venting technology is essential for managing the full range of demands a modern battery pack faces — from everyday pressure equalization to rapid emergency degassing. Backyard Provider showcases dual-stage battery vent solutions engineered to perform under the most demanding operating conditions. Our featured vents use high-performance hydrophobic and oleophobic Tetratex® expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) membranes for superior durability and contaminant resistance.
These integrated venting systems are engineered and supported for a variety of industry applications, including:
- Battery Electric Vehicles
- Hybrid Electric Vehicles
- Heavy Duty Vehicles
- Battery Energy Storage Systems
- Commercial Battery Packs
Features
Stages of Dual-Stage Venting
First Stage
The first stage focuses on continuous pressure equalization. A porous ePTFE membrane permits air and other gases to pass freely in and out of the battery pack, compensating for the pressure shifts caused by normal changes in altitude and temperature during everyday operation.

Second Stage
When a sudden pressure spike or internal heat event occurs, the second stage steps in to relieve the battery enclosure. It allows trapped gases to escape quickly by either rupturing the membrane or releasing the protective cap, preventing dangerous pressure buildup.

How Dual-Stage Venting Works
A. Retention Cap with Burst Pins
- Shields the membrane from direct spray
- Tested for both water and air tightness
B. Tetratex® ePTFE Membrane
- Hydrophobic and oleophobic defense against water, dust, and contaminants
- Delivers steady pressure equalization with a minimum airflow of 178 liters/hour at 10 mbar under normal conditions
C. Body
- Guards the membrane against spray intrusion
D. Quarter-Turn Bayonet Interface
- Simple, secure attachment to the battery pack housing
- Screw-Fit interface also available
E. O-Ring
- Provides a dependable seal to the battery pack wall
Dual-Stage Jet Battery Vent
A. Cap
- Protects the membrane from spray
- Validated for water and air tightness
- Ejects during a thermal runaway event
B. Tetratex® ePTFE Membrane
- Hydrophobic and oleophobic protection against water, dirt, and contaminants
- Maintains pressure equalization with a minimum airflow of 97 liters/hour at 10 mbar during normal operation
C. Poppet
- Holds the membrane in place and shields it from spray
- Launches clear during a thermal runaway event
D. Custom Seal
- Blocks dust and water from entering the battery pack
E. Body
- Signature profile allows adjustable release pressure and consistent performance
F. ISO-6149 Threaded Interface

Protection from the Inside Out
Every dual-stage battery vent featured here is built around proprietary Tetratex® ePTFE membrane technology. Manufactured in-house, the membrane is formed from tiny, randomly interconnected fibrils that create a breathable water barrier. This structure supports steady pressure equalization while blocking water, dirt, and airborne contaminants. Its oleophobic surface treatment further enables the filter media to repel oils, adding another layer of defense.
Solutions
Dual-Stage Jet
The dual-stage Jet vent raises the bar for battery safety with some of the fastest degassing performance available. Built to deliver reliable pressure equalization and contaminant protection under normal use, the Jet will jettison its cap and poppet the moment internal pack pressure crosses the release threshold. Rapid degassing takes place at roughly 100 liters/second at 100 mbar, dramatically reducing the risk of damage spreading to other cells.
- Screw-Fit or Bayonet Interface
- Minimum Airflow of 97 liters/hour at 10 mbar
- Opening Pressure of 115 mbar
Dual-Stage Burst
The dual-stage Burst vent offers dependable pressure equalization while keeping the battery pack fully sealed from outside contaminants. Its low-profile housing is paired with a retention cap featuring burst pins that pierce the membrane, providing quick pressure relief at roughly 25 liters/second at 200 mbar.
- Screw-Fit or Quarter-Turn Bayonet Interface
- Minimum Airflow of 178 liters/hour at 10 mbar
- Opening Pressure of 250 mbar
