The Challenge with Benchtop Lathes
A common issue with benchtop lathes is their lack of substantial weight compared to full-sized floor models, which often results in excessive vibration when not secured to a robust, heavy-duty foundation similar to our engineered design. To incorporate significant mass into our stand, we constructed it using solid lumber and particleboard. Medium-density fiberboard serves as an excellent alternative material. The design features a hollow beam construction that can be filled with sand, providing additional ballast to minimize vibrations even further.
However, all that substantial weight can become a considerable challenge when relocating your lathe throughout the workshop. To address this mobility concern, we engineered the stand with a bolt-together assembly that allows for easy disassembly when necessary. During construction, we incorporated dual drawers equipped with full-extension slides for convenient storage of lathe accessories. We also developed an optional pivoting tool rack that positions your turning tools within effortless reach while you're working at the lathe.
