Are Energy Ratings Required for RV A/C Units?

No. There's no government mandate for RV rooftop air conditioners, and no standardized industry benchmark either. That makes apples-to-apples efficiency comparisons surprisingly tricky.

Unlike RV units, traditional window air conditioners are legally required to carry an Energy Guide label listing a SEER or EER number. The higher the EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio), the more efficient the unit.

Only a handful of manufacturers actually publish EER figures for their RV models:

After slipping on my Sherlock Holmes cap and digging through the technical specs of a dozen popular RV air conditioners, I came to a clear conclusion.

Across the top 12 RV A/C units I compared, the average EER landed at roughly 6.0. That's not flattering — it's about half the legal minimum required of any residential air conditioner.

The good news: every major manufacturer now offers a "high-performance" or "high-efficiency" tier. Smaller brands like Advent Air and General Electric generally do not.

The Most Efficient RV A/C Units to Consider

These models deliver 25–40% better efficiency — but what does that actually translate to?

  • Will your RV get 25% colder?
  • Will it reach target temperature 25% faster?
  • Will cooling stay identical while using 25% less power?

The honest answer: it's usually some blend of all three, depending on conditions.

Here are the units I keep coming back to.

The Atwood Air Command is advertised (by Atwood) as delivering cooling equivalent to a standard 16K BTU unit — all thanks to an upgraded compressor and a dual-fan design. If your goal is to freeze the kids out of the living area, this one's for you.

It's also remarkably quiet for a rooftop unit.

Coleman-Mach 3 Power Saver

The Coleman-Mach 3 Power Saver delivers cooling performance in the same neighborhood as the Atwood Air Command, but with noticeably lower power draw. It's also roughly 55% more efficient than Coleman's own Mach 3 Plus Signature Series.

A Proven Classic Worth Considering

The Coleman Mach 15 is another strong efficient option — a 15,000 BTU rooftop unit trusted by RVers for reliable, powerful cooling on the road.

Furrion Chill

Furrion claims the Chill is about 25% more efficient than rival single-fan units. It sits squarely in the middle of the pack, offering both stronger cooling and lower power consumption.

Dometic Penguin II High Efficiency (Low Profile)

The Dometic Penguin II High Efficiency is an ultra-low-profile unit. It's not the most efficient unit on the list, but if you specifically need a low-profile mini-split-style form factor, your choices are limited — and this is one of the best.

How to Squeeze More Efficiency Out of Your RV A/C

Clean the Air Filter on a Schedule

Rinsing the intake filter regularly keeps airflow unobstructed by dust and grime — a five-minute task that pays dividends.

Install a Soft Start Device

Air conditioners pull a huge current spike at startup before settling into normal operation. That initial surge can be roughly double the steady-state draw.

A soft start device flattens that surge — and both the MicroAir EasyStart and the RV Soft Start are popular DIY-friendly options. The difference is real and measurable.

Eliminate the surge and you'll only need a modest 1800-watt portable generator or a 2000-watt power inverter to run your A/C comfortably.

Insulate Your Windows

Here's my favorite under-the-radar DIY option: install a mini-split. Mini-split air conditioners are almost silent and roughly three times more efficient than any rooftop RV unit.

Unlike traditional RV A/Cs, a mini-split separates the system into two components. The condenser lives outside, the evaporator mounts inside the living area, and refrigerant and electrical lines connect the two.

Mini-splits have become mainstream in tiny homes and apartments. A growing number of RV owners are even removing their rooftop units entirely and fitting a mini-split instead. Why? Whisper-quiet operation and dramatically lower power draw. A quick YouTube search will turn up plenty of real-world installs.

Installing a Mini-Split in an RV: The Rough Path

  1. Mount the evaporator (indoor handler) on a sturdy cabinet wall or interior partition.
  2. Install the condenser in the basement storage bay or another ventilated spot.
  3. Run the refrigerant line set between the two units.
  4. Open the basement vent while parked, turn on the A/C, and enjoy nearly silent cooling.
  5. Sell off your old rooftop unit — or repurpose it as a boat anchor.
