Keep in mind: electric heat pumps and natural gas or propane heaters operate on different scales. Gas heaters generally require a higher BTU rating to achieve the same result as an electric heat pump for an equivalent pool size.


The Three Core Sizing Rules

The BTU requirement for your pool is calculated based on water volume and the average ambient air temperature during the months you plan to use it. Use these three benchmarks as your starting point:

4 BTU / Gallon

Summer Use

When the average daily air temperature holds at or above 70°F, size your heat pump at 4 BTUs per gallon of pool water. A 10,000-gallon pool needs at least 40,000 BTUs.

5 BTU / Gallon

Spring & Fall

For shoulder-season use when average daily temperatures sit around 60°F, plan for 5 BTUs per gallon to keep up with greater heat loss to the cooler air.

6 BTU / Gallon

Extended Season

Heating in conditions below 60°F average air temperature demands 6 BTUs per gallon. This ensures the unit has enough output to heat effectively even in chillier conditions.
