Understanding the Importance of a Pressure Washer's PSI and GPM

A question that comes up often is, "What actually separates a pressure washer from a power washer?" In everyday conversation, most of us in the industry use the two terms interchangeably, but at least one manufacturer, Hydrotek, draws a line between them, describing a power washer as a lighter-duty relative of a pressure washer. Once that distinction is made, the follow-up is almost inevitable: "So what counts as light-duty versus heavy-duty?" The answer varies, but the cleanest way to approach it is by looking at the machine's PSI rating.

For the typical homeowner spraying down a deck or washing vinyl siding, a 1,500 PSI unit can feel powerful—certainly stronger than any garden hose, and more than enough to lift dirt off most home surfaces. A contractor, however, tackling oil-stained parking lots or heavy industrial grime, would find that same 1,500 PSI underwhelming. In their world, a truly "high pressure" machine sits closer to the 4,000–7,000 PSI range. With those different expectations in mind, here is a general breakdown of how the market is categorized:

And since a faster job usually means less fuel burned and less time on the clock, a well-matched machine can save you both time and money.

This is where the idea of Cleaning Units (CU) comes in. CU is calculated simply—PSI × GPM = CU—and it reflects how quickly a machine can clear a given surface. A higher CU means less time cleaning, and saved time almost always translates to saved money.

Consider two machines side by side. A unit rated at 2,000 PSI running 4 GPM produces a CU of 8,000. By comparison, a 2,500 PSI machine pushing just 2 GPM lands at a CU of only 5,000. Even though the second machine has a higher PSI on paper, the first will finish the job faster because it moves more water. Of course, pressure still matters—you wouldn't reach for 500 PSI to clean a house, nor 1,200 PSI to strip a parking lot—but when you're weighing machines against each other, both numbers deserve a careful look so you can find the model that genuinely fits your work and your budget.
